Received a package today

Strange package was waiting for me at the dining table when I arrived from work. I've been eagerly waiting for a certain parcel to arrive. Was this the one?

Tank factory: two Space Wolf rhinos and a razorback

Putting some old, yet unfinished projects here. These two Rhinos were started last September. Due to my nature of wanting to do other stuff on a whim these were left on the shelf. Once I'm done with them Cryx I'll finish these babies up. All of these were magnetized so they'll all can be either a rhino or a razorback. I'll post pictures later of how I did the magnetizing (these and the predator).

I'm sorry that I don't have much images of the different phases. These were taken long before I even thought about writing to teh interwebs. Also my memory is a bit hazy, so the colors I used might be a little off... But hopefully you'll get the general idea.

I primed all the chassis black using Army Painter black primer. I tried to ensure an even and thin coat on the model with quick swipes using short bursts.

The one on the left is done with the stipples and 1st highlight on them.
The other two show the stipple effect.

Cryx warjack WIP

Didn't get to finish a whole lot. But here's some WIP shots of the jacks so far.
Hope to finish the black paints soon. The plan is to give those metal (black now) parts a weathering afterwards.

One of the bonejacks almost done with black.

Closer zoom on the Slayer.

Cryx jacks rusting - part 2

So I finally got to the hairspray and salt part. To be honest, I was quite reluctant to try this at first because of the fear ruining the models. Ok, maybe not ruin them, but failing at this would mean to start over and time is not what I have too much at hand being a father of a almost 1.5 year old son.

Anyhoo. Here is the detailed tutorial I used.

On top of the rust paint (described here) I airbrushed the hairspray (regular hairspray used with the wife unit's permission) and before it was dry I sprinkled salt on the spots where I wanted the rust effect to be. In hindsight I could have used more.

Note about hairspray: Clean your airbrush immediately. The stuff dries all gooey and sticky that's hard to clean later on.

Cryx jacks rusting

The next stage of the Warmachine Cryx project has started. I'm gonna try a new weathering technique with these guys. It's involves painting the rust first and the covering it with hairspray and salt. Then I'll paint the jacks with their base color and after that's dry I'll wash the salt off with warm water. I almost ruined the minis with old white spray paint. It was so thick coming out that it made splotches on the minis' surface. I had to resort to a light grey color.

Note to self: Always shake the cans! Then shake some more! Then test, test and test before applying.

As I told you already this is a new technique for me so I'm eager to see how this turns out. I'm trying to follow the tutorials at Massive Voodoo and Painting Corps.

Below are pictures of the priming & rust painting.

Warjacks primed with black & hint of white spray paint.

Jacks after the rust treatment. All were varying mixes of VGC Beasty Brown,
VGEO Heavy Red, VMA Khaki Brown, VMA Sand Yellow and VMA Black.
These were applied with an airbrush.
The paints I used. The Model Air colors can be user straight from the
dropper bottle, but the Game colors need to be diluted. Especially the Heavy Red.
For thinning I use an about 2:8 ratio of Vallejo Thinner and Vallejo Airbrush Cleaner.

Space Wolf Predator

Heya,

Didn't manage much with the current projects. Just primed the Cryx minis and as there's really no point in posting the pics so I decided to show some of my earlier work here.

This Space Wolves predator was painted last summer and it was the first big model which I practiced using my airbrush with (also acquired last summer). Big models are so much easier to paint with an airbrush. I did try to use different techniques with it including color modulation and zenithal highlighting but I didn't quite succeed in them.

I learned a lot from the masters out there. Go check these out (if you already haven't):

Awesomepaintjob: http://www.youtube.com/user/awesomepaintjob
Scalemodelmedic: http://www.youtube.com/user/ScaleModelMedic
WGConsortium: http://www.youtube.com/user/WGConsortium
Scalemodelmadman: http://www.youtube.com/user/ScaleModelMadman

They also have other techniques besides airbrushing: weathering, brush, etc.

Back shot. Not overly happy with the edge highlights as they came out a bit
heavy (especially on the sponson lascannons).

The interior was base coated with black followed by 2 shades of grey
(can't really remember which) drybrushed. The radar got a GW Dark Angel Green
base coat and VGC Jade Green detail work. After that it was washed
with GW Thraka Green wash.

For the rust / dirt effect I used different shades of brown put on with a
blister pack foam. The tracks were given a liberal wash of old
GW Rust Brown ink thinned with a 1:10 mixture of Liquitex Flow Aid and
distilled water.

Cryx helljack contents and Deneghra basing

Finally got myself to take the pics of the Cryx helljack box. As always with Privateer Press' minis parts were neatly packed in a plastic bag with different compartments for the different parts (torso + legs, shoulders, heads, Corruptor, Slayer and Reaper weapon load outs). There were some mold lines and flash on the parts but nothing really bad. The kit of course included the cards and one base.

I'll probably get to building this after I'm finished with the 3 bonejacks, Slayer and Deneghra from the battle box.

Box opened + my desk full of stuff on the background.

Box contents laid out.

Deneghra's base done. Milliput used for plugging the gap followed
by some cork rocks and sand on top of glue.

I won something that is not a Star Wars soda cup!

I've been wanting to have a thunderwolf cavalry models for my puppies but never really checked the possible miniature manufacturers for the models (damn you GW not putting out the minis).

But... behold! I will soon have cool looking counts as TWC.
Deep bow to Black Matt for giving out these models. I never would've thought I would win this :)

Thank you, thank you and thank you!

5 Space Wolves done

I finally managed to finish off these five models that have been sitting on my desk for ages. I started these on November last year... phew. Ok, I still have to put on some varnish but paint job is finished.

I think I just wasn't happy with them and went back and redid a lot of details. After looking at the minis for couple of months on the desk, I just grabbed myself from the neck and just put it all together in one evening.
Like the quote on the blog header... I didn't really have a plan with these but somehow ended up where I needed to be.

The individual mini pics are taken before painting the base rim. Click pictures to enlarge.
From left to right: grey hunter w/ ccw & meltagun, long fang with multimelta,
wolf guard / gh with bolter & power fist,gh with bolter,
wg (battle leader) with wolf claw & storm shield.
Top part of the model is a space marine biker captain. Legs are from
the space wolves a battle force box.
Those melta guns are hard to find :)

WG battle leader for a campaign army.
Long fang with multi melta. Almost missed that
wolf pelt under the weapon.

WG with power fist. The gold turned out quite nice. 3:1 mix of VGC
Beasty Brown and VGC Glorious Gold base color followed by the same
gold on the raised surfaces. Final highlights are done with VMA Gold.

Cryx basing

Started the basing process with the Cryx minis. I didn't think much with the Slayer just slapped on some glue and dipped it in a box of mixed basing material. Hope I'd done some more work on it. The helljack kit will definitely have some more Ooof!-factor in it. With the bonejacks used Milliput to get some character into them.

Almost ready for priming. Can't wait to get to the painting with these guys.

Basic basing mix.

I tried to make a small puddle between the legs. Planning to fill it up with
Vallejo Still Water.

Few bigger rocks with smaller ones and sand.

Some sand and small rocks on top of Milliput.

Cryx building up

Last year me and my friend decided to have a go at Warmachine and what a delightful surprise it was. The game is so much different from 40k. Me likes.

Anyway... Choosing the faction to go for wasn't that hard as I saw the minis in the rulebook. Cryx models were by far the coolest looking things. Adding to that is the style of play (close combat, cunning, debuffing) which I liked very much as well.

I bought the starter box which included the warwitch Deneghra, Slayer helljack and the bonejacks Defiler and 2 Deathrippers. Here' are some WIP shots of the Cryx faction project.

Slayer helljack posing.

I magnetised the head and the arms (from shoulder and elbow)
which allows me to use different helljack loadouts with the same body.

Deathripper bonejack. Broke the leg during assebly so I had to pin it and fix it with greenstuff.

With bonejacks I magnetizeed the head.

Warwitch Deneghra as is.
What do you think? Comments wellcome :)

More progress to follow.

Cryx hellJack arrived

Sweet. Today got the plastic helljack kit from Maelstrom Games.
Unboxing it later today or tomorrow.

First post (welcome reader)

Hey,

This blog is about my painting and modeling hobby with miniature models, mainly WH40k and Warmachine.

I started the hobby back in the early 90's but life in general got in the way. I've recently been pulling myself back into it and decided to contribute to the blogosphere with my work (or lack thereof :) ).

Hope you enjoy.
