Still here

Just to let you know that I'm alive :)

I've been suffering from a lack of inspiration for hobby related stuff and at the same time World of Tanks and Dark Souls have been eating my free time.

I think I'll be recharged for more painting and modeling soonish.

BB Ogre WIP update #2

For some reason I just couldn't decide the color scheme I wanted to go for. In the end I just picked the blue for the pants and started painting. Let's see how he turns out. As usual, the paints are pretty well thinned to have a good flow. I use a flow aid and (distilled) water mix in 1:10 ratio.

Necrosurgeon and stitch thralls WIP update

Here's what I managed to do with the necrosurgeon and her gang.

The thralls didn't get much paint on. With the one standing on the bag, I just deepened the shadows a bit to make them stand out more. I just used GW badab black wash carefully applied to the crevices. The others got some shading done on them. I used GW rotting flesh thinned with flow aid and water mix and Vallejo glaze medium. I went over the spots that would receive more light a few times.

New stuff and project updates coming soon

Got new additions to my toy soldier armies and finally had time to actually make some progress with the current  minis on the painting table. I'll be posting the WIP shots later once I'm done with the images.

But to the new stuff:

Wow, that was fast. We have a winner!

I opened up my blog this morning and found out that there were 102 followers on the list. Nice :)
That also meant that I picked the winner for the Dreadknight.

Here is the result.

New stuff, little update and a raffle giveaway

I haven't been able to put too much hours into the current projects due to work and other things. I think sometimes one just has to prioritize, I guess. Anyway, keep reading since I've got a little something for all you followers :)

Show your workstation

Just thought I'd post mine. I got a really good space in the cellar to which I moved to after my son was born and my hobby room was given to him. I still need to work on the shelves and the layout. Currently the paints are in a container on the floor which is no way an ideal place.

The dice arrived just the other day...

...they came to me in the usual way...

By mail.

My wife's already asking what's with all these parcels you're getting. When it comes to the hobby one can't just have too much of... well, anything ;)

Pistol Wraith WIP

Pistol wraith is getting progress as well. I found out that the mini is somewhat hard to paint since it's hard to tell what is actually all that stuff under the coat. A skirt perharps? :) If someone has an idea I'd be glad to hear it.

Lelith Hesperax WIP

Quick update on  Lelith. I'm trying to make sure that I paint this one well enough to compensate acquisition process.

So far the skin getting some paint on. I'll post the full list of paints once I'm happy with the results.

Terrain making WIP

** EDIT**
Added a pic of the other bits I finished at the bottom.

Thought I'd give a shot at making some terrain. I got loads of foam from a friend who was doing some renovating. There can only be one use for a wargamer for it :)

Stitch thralls: update

The stitch thralls have also progressed somewhat. Some of the images have been shot while they were still wet, so they might look a bit glossy.

For the priming I wanted to try different priming techniques with them and see what difference they make when painting them and what are the end results like.

Blood bowl: Wood Elves

Wardancers and catchers

So it's another trip down the memory lane. Not so long this time though. I painted this team around about 8 years ago. The end result is much better than with the dark elves but still there's a lot of room for improvements. For example this was the first time I was painting red and white... and it looks like that too.

Facebook bandwagon

Yes, I'm on it. 2nd truck, 106th row, 68th from the left.
Right under the followers on the right sidebar.

Just another way to get updates from me :)

Line elves

Thought I'd post... well Furinji actually asked in one comment to post photos of my current Blood Bowl teams.

So, here are the Dark Elves.

BB Ogre: Painting Skin

I started the skin for the ogre. This time I used the airbrush cause I wanted try it out for some more detailed work.

Acquired: Lich Lord Terminus

I just had to buy this beast because it was just too cheap @ Boostep. There was a slight glitch though since I ordered it at the end of June.

The paint pots

I read redmanphill's post this morning and it instantly reminded me of this funny story (old I know, but still valid).

Originally posted @

I guess a hot debate took place among Games Workshop marketing department. I can imagine it:

- Welcome gentlemen. Today's topic is "How can we make people buy more paint?". We sell miniatures, books, rules, on everything we increase our margins except on paint. This has to change. How can we force customers to buy more of Citadel paints?

Necrosurgeon: painting skin

Necrosurgeon is getting paint on. Somehow I'm really loving this model :)

I'm aiming for zenithal highlighting here again. I really love that technique as it is relatively easy and produces really good looking minis.

Space wolves: long fangs

I'm trying to post an overview of both my armies, space pups and dark eldar, here eventually. Yes, even the ones I painted 20 years ago. These models I finished up about a half a year ago so they're not that 'bad'. I still have to fix the original metal long fangs which still have the 90's paints on them.

Fixing Lelith Hesperax

So Lelith...

I should've returned the damned model to GW.  My GS skills were nowhere near doing the small detail work to fix all the parts on it. So I just did the ones I knew I could do. The spikes (read: Finecast tubes) were impossible. I just went ahead and cut the malformed ones off on the leg.

BB ogre: waiting for the paint job

So after a looong hiatus of painting a Blood Bowl model, here's one: The Ogre. I think I ordered this something like 10 years ago for just the painting, since I don't own a team that has an ogre in their rosters. So far I have wood elves, dark elves, norse (unpainted) and khemri (unpainted).

Necrosurgeon and stitch thralls, pistol wraith: update

My summer vacation is now over and what a summer it's been. Statistically it was the hottest July in 20 something years here in Finland. Hopefully I can advance my projects on the painting table now a bit more, now that it's gotten colder (normalised) again  :) Above image has all the current minis I'm working on now and from now on I'm separating them here in the blog.

And without a further ado, here's the Warmachine necrosurgeon, stitch thralls and a pistol wraith.

Next up

More to paint, it never ends ;)

* 40k: Lelith Hesperax
* WM: Necrosurgeon & 3 stitch thralls
* WM: Pistol Wraith
* Blood Bown: Ogre

Lelith will also have an intensive green stuff treatment to fix the numerous malformations and I'm really looking forward to painting that ogre. It's been lying unpainted somewhere for a good 10+ years. Let's see what I can come up with it. Additionally one unit and a solo from the Cryx force will get a fresh paint job.

Hopefully mixing different styles will keep the work refreshing :)

Oh... Wayland Games cancelled my order for the Legion of Everblight warpack :( PP is really having hard time delivering the goods to us right now.

McThralls off the painting table

Weeee! The thralls are finally done. Time to decide what to do next. Enjoy the pics.

Deneghra varnished and finished

I finally finished Denny. Did the static grass on the base and varnished her today. Although I'm not 100% satisfied, I didn't want to drag final work too long.  Here are the final pics. Enjoy.

Next the mechanithralls are receiving the same base treatment.

Deneghra and McThralls: Marking the front arcs

McThralls and Denny nudged a good part closer to finish. Managed to paint the front arcs onto the bases. I had a bit of a struggle how to mask the bases and the parts on the minis for airbrush work. Here's how I did it. If someone has a different solution, please comment away.

Lelith Hesperax: Unboxing and inspection part 2

Heya peeps,

Got the replacement Lelith yesterday and looked through the model closely last night.

Lelith "Finecast" Hesperax: Unboxing

So... I decided to try out the GW Finecast products and I wanted to paint something for my dark eldar. So I walked into the local GW store here in Helsinki. The range isn't huge for DE yet and I really didn't want to buy a whole unit so the choice came down to Urien, Archon and Lelith Hesperax. As I have the first two the choice was obvious.

Painting mechanithralls: work in progress

Little progress yet again: Some details on the skin and the green glow plus the base done. Only the front arc marking on the base rim and some minor detail left to do. Deneghra is getting some paint on as well and I'm hoping to finish her with the McThralls.

McThralls WIP: Base painting

Not much to report. Bit on a slow side with painting.
World of Tanks and Vassal games (both warmahordes & 40k) taking a chunk of my time late night which is the only time for painting too.

Been thinking about getting a Hordes faction along with the Cryx. So far the Legion of Everblight seems to be the most fun for me to play. On the plus side I count the cool models as well. The warpack + some additional models would be nice to have.

Pure Ana-awesomeness!

Go and check this out: Mounted lord of Tzeentch and totally different scale. Amazing :)

Open letter to GW

My condolences to the not-Northern-EU fellow hobbyists & gamers out there.
This is a re-post of Kirby's original letter. Please read it.

To Games Workshop,

Why? No seriously, why? I'm sure the excuse of cutting off Australasia and other countries (Canada, India, Korea, South American countries, etc.) to benefit the independent and GW store sales in Australia sounded good but unless you cut the prices here to not be a ridiculous 200% higher price than overseas, it's not going to happen. Let's look at this logically. You've stopped us from buying from stores like Maelstrom and Wayland with an embargo agreement in your Terms and Conditions (remember globalisation? how's that going btw?). Does this mean we are going to now buy at RRP in Australia or other countries? No.

There are other outlets overseas we can buy from which are still much cheaper (hi America), other companies which you cannot touch without raising a helluva lot of crap (hi ebay) and people who are willing to ship to us overseas (hello family and friends) without the 200% tax. We won't be getting as huge a discount as before but it's much better than buying here at RRP. The other option is of course going to be quitting which I imagine some people are going to do. Check out this thread on WargamerAU where a lot of people are indicating they are. The ultimate bottom line? Your bottom line suffers (more people leaving) and the retailers in Australia do not benefit.

Now I'm all for one in supporting the locals. I buy all my products such as spray paint, paints, plasticard, magnets, drills + bits, modelling putty, brushes, etc. from Australia. As an aside, do you actually stock good quality merchandise for all of those options? I don't see you selling plasticard, magnets, good sized drillbits, custom bases, etc. I'd be happy to pay a 5-10% premium on these objects compared to other stores to support your business but then again, I don't really want to support your business currently do I? The point of any business is to make a profit but the problem with your business model is you do not do this whilst concurrently supporting your customer base. We don't ask for much but a short list would look like...

  • not raising prices every year, without fail, regardless of the economic situation or inflation rates
  • basing prices around the world upon exchange rates (I wouldn't be averse to paying 20% more in Australia compared to the UK or America locally but I am adverse to paying twice as much) - there are circumstances in each country that make operating there more or less expensive but you need a base retail price for your product which is then translated by exchange rates at a given time (i.e. quarterly) rather than a price set many, many years ago. It's part of being in a global market.
  • regular and quick FAQs - you've done a fantastic job IMO of creating some pretty balanced books for 5th edition, fix the grey areas quickly.
  • official erratas - man up and admit you've made mistakes (hi Tyranids) and work on erratas that are official and re-print the books with these amendments. Admitting a mistake and fixing it isn't a problem and I'd applaud you for it. Ignoring a problem is.
  • fix Fantasy - you did it with 40k, why go backwards with Fantasy?
  • don't think your customer base is moronic - the resin re-cast to be cheaper than metals whilst hiking prices, not fooling anyone.
Ultimately people in Australia and other countries go overseas for their Games Workshop products for a reason: it's significantly cheaper (I.e. half price). What motivation is there to therefore buy from our locals when you aren't treating your customers with loyalty and support? People will walk away and your bottom line will hurt. A simple solution: care about your customers. Change the Australian (and other countries) prices so they are at least similar to the UK and US. This doesn't have to be the exact same price but some parity would be greatly appreciated.

Here's a quick example. If you could buy a similar product for $45 compared to $150, what would you do? How about if the product was the exact same but if you ordered it overseas it was $80 compared to $150 by the time it reached your door step? I'm pretty sure you'd want to take the cheaper option correct? For you as a company, you make your profit margin through the reseller regardless of where it is purchased. You may make more money off a direct sale at an Australian store compared to an Internet sale from the UK but you have already achieved the profit margin from the Internet sale already. The Australian stores may be hurting but this is down to the initial price you have set, not market trends. Simply put, you are alienating customers from a large and developing market.

I and many of the readers here obviously enjoy your game. We've played it through thick and thin (4th edition...) or come back thanks to an improvement game balance (5th edition) and don't want to leave. We will though sooner or later if you keep piling on idiotic choices on us. Other companies like Privateer Press did very well in the early to mid-2000s for a reason and people will migrate to other gaming systems if you continue to mistreat them and their loyalty.

As it stands I question why you do the things you do. Raising prices every year annoys me but I cannot complain too loudly as your products are a luxury item but you do not provide excellent customer service one usually expects with such goods. I certainly find minimal fault with your staff or when your product is damaged/faulty but your overarching business model seems counter-intuitive to maintaining a customer base. Even if you are getting a large amount of new customers imagine how much better off your company would be if you had maintained a significant portion of your repeat customers. The model you are running currently to me does not seem sustainable as your turnover rate in customers is just too high. I applaud your efforts in making 40k 5th edition a more competitive game but what you've done to Fantasy 8th edition doesn't bode well for the future.

Please, look to satisfy both the shareholders and the customer rather than just the former.

Kirby. Janzki.

McThralls: getting some paint on

For these thralls I used the recipe from bile thrall tutorial @
The skin base coat (airbrushed) is done and the first red wash is applied. Next I'm continuing with the washes trying to achieve an end result worth gaming with.

Spring is here again :)

After a long and snowy winter the spring is finally here.

Work in slow progress

Hey all,

I have been rather busy mainly with World of Tanks and Portal 2. Managed to squeeze in a small painting session nevertheless.

It sure is funny how the mistakes show up when you look your own work
up close.

New stuff from the mail man

Hey all.

I've been using the Liquitex Flow Aid with water to thin down my paints but the Glazing Medium is brand new product for me. Gonna try it out in the following projects.

I haven't found a place that sells them here in Finland so I ordered them from

Does anybody have any sort of experience with the glazing medium?

Varnished and finished!

Yay for me! Finally the jacks are done and I'm ready to start something else. Next time I won't be doing 4 jacks at the same time. It sure is a lot of work for someone who can only put so many hours into the hobby anyway.

Warjacks almost finished

Say cheese!
This project is nearing it's end. I think I just have to leave it here cause it's been that detail work all over the last week. "Need to fix this, need to fix that..." Just have to settle with these. Fairly happy with them anyways. To be honest I really cant wait to get to the next project which is again an unfinished one. I'll get to that later.

Slowly progressing with warjacks

Haven't had much time for painting since I had a couple of games of Warmachine with my Cryx and we've been busy with our campaign games with Vassal. Anyway managed to squeeze in an hour or two so here are the WIPs.

Group photo. Defiler, 2 Deathrippers and Slayer.

Random thoughts

Why does the GW Devlan Mud wash smell so bad?
Why does the GW Dheneb Stone separate when diluted?

Also good night to my wife and son on a skiing trip somewhere there up north...

Back to painting.

Metal done on the jacks

Metal and gold done on the Cryx warjacks. The gold turned out to be little too yellow (those images exaggerate the yellowness) need to check if there's something I can do about it.
Gold is really not that yellow irl.
Anyway the recipes are as follows (all were thinned with Vallejo Thinner about 1:1 ratio, depending on the paints):

Basecoat: VGC Chaos Black
Base color: 1:1 mix of VGC Leather Brown and VGC Glorious Gold
Highlight: Glorious Gold
Wash: Les Bursley's Armor Wash

Basecoat: Chaos Black
Base color: VMA Gun Metal
Wash: Les Bursley's Armor Wash
Highlight: VMA Gun Metal

Slayer metallized.
